Traditional coir doormats have been aroud for many years. They are made from brown coir which is made from the fibres between the husk and the shell of the ripened coconut. The brown coir is primarily produced in Kerala in India and Sri Lanka, harvested from palm trees and then processed by hand and by machine.
Coir matting is a very hardwearing fibre, ideal for high traffic entrance areas. It's pretty much water proof and helps to prevent dirt from travelling further into the building. It is a very attractive colour in it's natural state but can also be dyed many colours.
Coir mats were originally woven but more recently the coir matting was modified with a PVC backing which enabled it to be cut to any shape or size without fraying. This in turn led to the birth of logo inset coir doormats (like the ones available from Crucial Floors ) Images could now be inset into a base mat using different colours of coir. These mats are very popluar with shops, pubs, clubs and restaurants as they give a lasting good first impession which is also known as functional advertising.
Now mats can be bespoke or custom made to fit any entrance whether it be a logo mat for a business premises or for a domestic setting, such as the front or back door, they can be used for patio doors or for the shed or garage. They are very useful mats whether plain or decorated with personalised message.
Another innovation in the matting industry was the printed doormat which is aimed at the domestic market. These mats are smaller for standard doors and doorways and usually incorporate a message such as "welcome" or a bespoke novelty message provided by the customer and printed by family run companies such as TW Betts andCrucial Floors who also sell personalized doormats on eBay. These make ideal presents for birthdays, anniversaries and especially for house warming. The standard size is 65cm x 35xm but any size is available by request. Contact details are available on the Crucial Floorswebsite. They also fit and sell woven coir carpet which is also available from larger companies such as Alternative Flooring who sell a huge range of natural flooring as well as matting. The coir products are very reasonably priced when you consider just how much work has gone into making them, it's amazing that the coconut can provide such a range of products.
